Real-Time Telemetry & Bi-Directional WebSocket Relay for Developer Environments

When building companion software for software engineers, transmission speed is non-negotiable. If an engineer taps 'Approve Command' on their iPhone, and the desktop takes 3 seconds to register the keystroke, the experience feels broken.

To achieve the sub-50ms latency required for live terminal streaming and instantaneous prompt approvals, AG Remote designed a specialized bi-directional WebSocket relay infrastructure.

The Relay Architecture: Edge WebSocket Hubs

Direct peer-to-peer WebRTC connections between a mobile carrier IP and a residential Wi-Fi router often fail due to strict NAT boundaries, firewalls, and frequent cellular base-station handoffs. To guarantee 99.99% connection success, AG Remote employs global edge relay nodes:

  • Stateless Message Switching: Edge nodes inspect only packet destination headers, relaying payloads without disk logging or payload persistence.

  • Binary Protobuf Serialization: High-throughput terminal ANSI streams are encoded with Protocol Buffers instead of verbose JSON, cutting network payload overhead by 68%.

  • Heartbeat & Fast Reconnect: The mobile client utilizes adaptive ping-pong timers. If cellular signal drops for 3 seconds entering an elevator, the WebSocket pipeline instantly resynchronizes state upon reconnect.

End-to-End Cryptographic Security

Developer terminals handle confidential environment variables, proprietary source code, and production deployment keys. Security cannot rely merely on TLS in transit:

AG Remote implements asymmetric cryptographic pairing between the desktop daemon and the mobile client:

  • Local Key Generation: During initial pairing, the iOS app and desktop daemon generate ephemeral Ed25519 keypairs via secure QR code exchange.

  • Zero-Knowledge Relay: The central relay servers have zero access to decryption keys. Even if the relay server was compromised, terminal streams remain completely opaque ciphertext.

  • Terminal Sanitization Filters: Local regex scanners mask common secret patterns (such as AWS secret keys, GitHub tokens, and database passwords) before payloads ever leave the local machine.

Developer telemetry demands uncompromising zero-trust encryption: high-performance relay capabilities without exposing codebase secrets to third-party infrastructure.
